Recently 19-year-old Evan Lacey was killed after meeting with someone in an effort to sell his car through an online marketplace. Sadly, this is not the first time something like this has happened. There have been an abundance of crimes associated with the exchange of goods since the inception of online marketplaces such as Craigslist, OfferUp, and Letgo. These days people are more apt to sell things that they no longer have any use for and that they feel they can make a quick buck from online. The convenience and ease of these online marketplaces and apps can draw in  even the most cautious and reserved person, hence the reason why so many people flock to use them.

In 2015 WAFB9 Baton Rouge reported that since 2007 there were 86 killings associated with Craigslist. According to Craigslist Crime Statistics and AIM Consulting Group, at least 330 crimes a year are linked to craigslist. This doesn't even account for crimes that are linked to the newer companies such as OfferUp and Letgo. These companies have grown to make billions of dollars in revenue. It is the responsibility of theirs to ensure its users' protection by implementing safeguards to keep them safe.

Maribely Lopez, 21, Austin David Parton, 32, Rosa Garcia, 37, Trinidad Bueno Sanchez, 43, Evan Lacey, 19. These are just a fraction of the people that have lost their lives after trying to sell things on OfferUp. I am certain that criminals would be less likely to prey on others if they were required to provide personal and identifiable information.

Tell congress and the CEOs of these companies that we're living in a different world where things have changed and now its time for them to adapt to it. Sign this petition requiring both buyers and sellers to register their credit card and ID or driver's license information in order to sell, buy, and view seller information online. This WILL help save lives.
