Revoke Aung San Suu Kyi’s honourary Canadian citizenship

We, the student body of Royal West Academy, denounce the atrocities committed by the Burmese government against the Rohingya Muslims, who are being meaninglessly persecuted by the Buddhist majority in Myanmar. We urge the Canadian government to take action and speak out against Aung San Suu Kyi’s passive behaviour regarding the Rohingya persecution. The Myanmar government’s treatment of the Rohingya has left them the victims of what is being called ethnic cleansing and has forced them to live in deplorable conditions that are unfit for any human being, let alone for people in times of need. We hope that with your support, MP Marc Garneau, and with the support of the parliament, we can make a difference for these people in great need of our help.
For these reasons we ask the Canadian government to revoke Aung San Suu Kyi’s honorary Canadian citizenship. Her blatant disregard and refusal to acknowledge the genocide is unacceptable and goes against Canadian values. Revoking an honorary citizenship is a serious act. It would spread awareness about the conflict in Myanmar, as well as demonstrate to the Canadian population and to the rest of the world that the mistreatment of the Rohingya and Aung San Suu Kyi’s unwillingness to put a stop to it are unacceptable. As Canadians, we can no longer tolerate Aung San Suu Kyi behavior and we must be a role model for others to denounce her lack of action.
