Daniel Stratton started this petition to Mapleton City Council and

Mapleton has long been a rural, bedroom community. Property and "green space" have always been important.  Times are changing, and Mapleton will change with those times.  The question is what do we want our city to be?

There is a proposal before the Mapleton City planning commission to change the zoning for an 18-acre parcel on the corner of 1600 West and 1600 South.  5 acres would be set aside for a grocery store and 2 retail pads, along with a fuel station.  On the remaining 13 acres, the developer wants to put 89 homes (21 small single family homes with .18 acre lots and 68 townhomes with .05 acre parcels).  The agenda for the planning commission meeting being held on Thursday August 8, 2019 at the Mapleton City Hall can be found here.

The developer claims that this development is consistent with Mapleton City's personality, and somewhere "we can be proud of".  It might be of interest to know that this proposal is being spearheaded by Jonathan Reid (Mapleton City Council member).  It is also extremely similar to a proposal that was made by Mr. Reid and his partners previously over on slant road, which had to be defeated via referendum.

Somewhat as a result, the city has engaged an external agency to build a revised City General Plan.  This may be somewhat of a watershed event.  It will be the first time in city history that a general plan hasn't been built in-house, by potentially biased parties.  Allowing such a radical change to the city plan, which has never been approved in these concentrations before, would undermine any work the city will publish before it is even published.  Calls to delay this decision have so far gone unanswered.

We encourage all of the citizens of Mapleton to get involved. Whether you agree with this proposal, or disagree, get involved.  In a quote attributed to Edmund Burke, he said "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing".  Regardless of the character of these men, the proposal they are making is bad for Mapleton, and its future.

A plat map of the proposal can be found here.
