Why this petition matters

Started by Josh Roter

In 1946 the Toronto Huskies hosted the first game in NBA history when they played the New York Knickerbockers right here in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens. Fast forward almost 50 years and Toronto was granted an expansion franchise to start play in the 1995-96 season. In maybe the largest blunder in sports branding history, the team chose a prehistoric reptile as its mascot instead of throwing it back and using the city’s incredible basketball history to its advantage. How a city with such deep and rich pro basketball tradition did not use its original colouring and logo marks is beyond comprehension. The Raptor not only is not native to the city of Toronto, it’s not even from this continent! This city bleeds blue and white, every other sports team wears those colours with pride. Help us rename Toronto’s NBA team and restore its past glory in its true colours and illustrious original word mark and nickname, “The Huskies”…
