Many students of the University of Toronto are coming together to demand the removal of the University of Toronto from any #1 ranking for Canadian Universities, should the University continue to be negligent towards the student demands regarding mental health support.

Since 2018 there have been 5 known student death-by-suicides at the University of Toronto. (June 2018, January 2019, March 2019, September 2019 and November 2020). Four of the five student suicides have occurred on campus. Three of them occurred at the Bahen Centre for Information Technology. Temporary barriers were installed within Bahen to "prevent suicide."

The University of Toronto has fostered a toxic environment that has been negatively affecting the mental health of students for many years. The students are losing their peers to suicide and the University of Toronto continues to neglect the demands of students. The University of Toronto fails to hold themselves accountable and has yet to make meaningful change within the institution's system and culture. Students are choosing death over being a University of Toronto student, and the Universities ability to disregard this issue is disheartening. Students have asked that the University stops normalizing student suicide and poor mental health, as students should not have to recover from their post-secondary education.

Students have been handcuffed by campus police while at the Health and Counselling Centre seeking help for suicidal thoughts. The University has built its elite status on their students ability to take on unnecessarily large workloads, that forces many students to neglect their mental health. Yet, resources are inaccessible. The wait times for professional mental health support at the University of Toronto range from weeks to months, and prevent students from receiving help during times of crisis. U of T recently put $3 million towards mental health services, bringing the number of counsellors up to 90, for their 90 000+ students. None of these points are worthy of a #1 ranking in Canada.

It is inhumane, unjust, and inexcusable to glorify a university that neglects the continuous demands of their students in regards to mental health support and an environment/culture shift. The #1 ranking is a prestigious and elite spot that shines light on an institution, which provides them with a platform to set an example for other institutions. As students, it is our responsibility to look out for our fellow/potential peers around the world and let them know that the University is nowhere near what it is glorified to be.
