Section 375, the provision of rape in the Indian Penal Code (IPC) mentioned as its exception clause- “Sexual intercourse by man with his own wife, the wife not being under 15 years of age, is not rape.”

Statistically, women are 40 times more likely to be sexually assaulted by their husband than a stranger. Fewer than 1 percent of sexual assaults within marriage are reported to police. It is ironic that in India, where marriage is sacrosanct, you can rape your partner. 

Marital rape is a human rights violation. Then why is the horrific act of rape committed within a marriage legal in India? No social custom or religious belief permits rape. Sex without consent is rape and marriage is no exception.

Sign this petition to urge Maneka Gandhi, Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development, to take measures against this. We will stand up for the criminalization of marital rape in India.
