Though started to help a newly wed couple initiate their homely lives in the earlier times, Dowry has become a bane for our society today. It is a way for both the bride’s and groom’s families to showcase their so called worth/prosperity to the outer world. 24,771 Innocent lives in the last 3 years and 21 Innocent lives every day succumb to dowry in India.

The other day I read about Bihar Government’s measure to curb the practice of dowry in the state. I could not resist myself from forwarding the news to all my relatives, friends and colleagues. A jolt of happiness rushed through me on witnessing how each person to whom I had sent the news instantly agreed with and supported the move. However, my happiness was short lived. I soon realized that although everyone might seem to agree that Dowry should be banned, the practice in itself is still pretty much prevalent in India.

In its latest move, the Bihar Government has contemplated to sack the jobs of its employees that are found involving themselves in the act of Dowry. In order to ensure that the new scheme is followed strictly, it shall soon be sending directives to its various departments and district administrations.

When Bihar can come up with such a powerful scheme, why should the country lag behind? You all are welcome to sign this petition and leave your suggestions and measures to curb the practice of dowry in the comments section.
