Many active duty military members hide their mental health issues for fear of retribution and removal from their specific duty/specialty. A mandatory psychological evaluation AFTER detachment from active service would remove the danger of losing your job for seeking help while still addressing the mental health of veterans as a check upon the exit of the service member from active service. Furthermore, a 6-12 month checkup should be implemented to evaluate how the service member is transitioning to civilian life past the stress of the act of transitioning itself. This would greatly help to reduce the near 20 veterans per day that take their own lives.
