Mandatory Confidential Therapists in Schools

The Issue

We, the undersigned, demand that every school and university must employ at least one licensed therapist, legally bound to protect student privacy.

The Mental Health Crisis Among Students
📉 1 in 5 students worldwide suffers from a mental health disorder. (WHO, 2022)
📉 50% of all mental health conditions start by age 14, but most go undiagnosed and untreated. (WHO, 2021)
📉 Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. (WHO, 2023)
📉 80% of students report academic stress, and 40% experience symptoms of depression or anxiety. (American Psychological Association, 2022)
📉 70% of students fear opening up to school counselors due to a lack of confidentiality. (Mental Health Foundation, 2023)

The Problem
🚨 Schools often have counselors, but many are:

Unqualified for therapy (trained only in career guidance).
Overloaded (1 counselor per 500+ students).
Legally obligated to report private conversations, breaking student trust.
🚨 Without proper, confidential mental health support, students suffer in silence, develop severe conditions, or resort to extreme actions.

What We Are Demanding
✅ A Licensed Therapist in Every Educational Institution

Schools must employ at least one full-time, licensed mental health professional (Clinical Psychologist, School Psychologist, or Licensed Mental Health Counselor).
✅ Mandatory Confidentiality & Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)

The therapist must be legally bound to confidentiality, except in life-threatening situations.
No forced reporting of student issues to parents/teachers without consent.
✅ Student-Only Access & Safe Spaces

Students should self-initiate therapy sessions.
Therapy must be free from administrative or parental interference.
✅ Regular Mental Health Screenings & Preventative Care

Schools must provide biannual mental health check-ups for students.
Educators must be trained to recognize mental health red flags.

Why This Matters
🔹 Mental health = physical health. Schools have nurses—why not therapists?
🔹 Confidentiality builds trust. Without it, students will never speak up.
🔹 Early intervention saves lives. Timely therapy prevents breakdowns, self-harm, and long-term psychological damage.
🔹 This is a necessity, not a luxury. The current system is failing students.

Our Call to Action
📢 We demand immediate policy implementation requiring:
✔ A licensed full-time therapist in every educational institution.
✔ Legal confidentiality protections for student mental health sessions.
✔ Mandatory training for teachers on recognizing mental health warning signs.
