Acetaminophen overdoses, intentional and unintentional, are the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States. Other countries have experienced this problem, including the UK, who mandated that Acetaminophen (Tylenol) be sold in blister-pack form & with no more than 16 pills.

A severe overdose is generally classified as an ingestion of 10,000 mg or more; therefore, by reducing the quantity sold and making the user push out each pill individually, a severe, intentional overdose is much less likely to occur. As the UK saw, implementing these measures reduced the rate of Acetaminophen suicide deaths by 43 percent!

Personal anecdote: As someone who has attempted suicide with Acetaminophen 10 times, I can tell you with complete certainty that these measures would have prevented me from overdosing, as I would not have been able to act impulsively or have access to large quantities of Acetaminophen.
