Why this petition matters

Started by Caroline Taylor

After waking up this morning to the news of another child being left locked in a hot bus and being forgotten about in Australia our hearts sank! How on earth does this happen, again! With so many mandates and regulations being made on the daily, how on earth has this not been addressed! After doing some research this morning and looking on the ACECQA website it states that there should be a “Procedure for embarking and disembarking the means of transport, including how each child is to be accounted for on embarking and disembarking” - Obviously individual procedures are not working and we are calling on all governments to make a standard requirement to strengthen an over site in the Safe transportation of Children.

We live in the Pilbara of Western Australia where over the last summer temperatures reached nearly 50 degrees on some days, yesterday’s incident occurred in 29 degree heat!

A vehicle we recently came across ain our vehicle repair shop was being used for transportation of children and they had an alarm fitted that would sound every time the ignition was started and turned off, meaning you would have to open the sliding door, walk to the back of the bus (checking every seat on your way past) and pushing a button at the back mounted to the rear wall ensuring that no one had been left in the vehicle. This has stuck in my mind ever since and I honestly cannot believe that this has not been made a requirement for every single vehicle that transports other peoples children or family members from a education and care service or our disabled and elderly community members where people other then there families are in control of there whereabouts, health and well-being!

We are asking every single person today to sign this petition as we feel no one should ever have to go through loosing a family member to a lack of someone forgetting to check a vehicle every time it is turned off - ensuring an alarm goes off physically enforces someone to walk through the vehicle and triple check that no one is left on there! As a whole community we can ensure this doesn’t happen again!
