Why this petition matters

Started by Hailey Coburn

Among the 282 residents in Tripp Hall, at UW-Madison, there are 0 gender-neutral toilets available. On each floor, there are three bathrooms so this would be perfect to assign one for women, one for men, and one for all. This is not the case. On the first floor of Vilas's house, two rooms are for men, and only one for women. This causes all the women to have to share one toilet together, whilst the men have two.

If you sign this petition, you want the University of Wisconsin-Madison to simply remove one of the bathroom signs on each floor. This would be beneficial for all. Men can still use the men's bathroom, and women use the women's bathrooms, that all stays the same.

A survey from PNPI stated that 1.7% of undergraduates and graduates in America identify as trans and non-binary. Out of the 40,000 students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this equates to at least 700 students, but keep in mind that there is a stigma about identifying as trans or non-binary. The real number of trans or non-binary students could be much larger.

Imagine yourself having to go, but all the gender-labeled booths are full. All because of a small note on the door.

Our solution is simple, by taking one sign per hallway, you help hundreds of trans or non-binary students. They have the right to go to the bathroom!
