Petition to request Manchester Evening News to cover Lacrosse in the North!

Lacrosse is vastly under-publicised in The UK. Since the demise of the weekly national lacrosse coverage from the Daily Telegraph, our game is desperately lacking in recognition and publicity outside of our own networks.

Manchester (and the surrounding area) is the epicentre of English Lacrosse. The NEMLA Premiership is the highest standard and most competitive men's lacrosse competition in The UK (and Europe) and the region plays home to the best players in the nation.

87% of the England Men's National Team who finished 5th in the 2018 World Championships started their lacrosse journeys in the Northern region and currently ply their lacrosse trade in the NEMLA Premiership. Team England Senior Men's team train in Manchester at MMU's Platt Lane facilities and the National Governing Body for the sport, English Lacrosse, is based at the Etihad complex.

Manchester truly is the home of English Men's Lacrosse and has been since the sport was introduced to the area in the 1870's. It is the home of the oldest club lacrosse competition in the world and has successfully hosted 3 World Championship tournaments in 1978, 1994 and 2010.

Despite this rich lacrosse tradition in and around the Manchester area and our team's success on an international scale, our sport receives no coverage whatsoever from the national or even regional press.

We, the undersigned, believe this to be worthy of change.

Manchester Evening News is a regional institution with a print circulation of nearly 40,000. We believe that, as the preeminent media outlet in the Manchester area, the MEN should be working to share the stories and successes of our sport across it's reader/user-base. We are very proud of the successes our region creates and nurtures, we feel that the MEN should share our pride with a wider network.

Despite sending multiple emails sent to the MEN newsdesk, we have thus far heard no response from the organisation with regard to potential coverage of our sport. As a community, we are happy to share our stories, results, photographs and write-ups to the MEN for no cost in order to help to publicise the hard work we do to promote our sport and our clubs which form key parts of our local communities. We understand we are a minority sport and will never be as popular as the football, rugby or basketball which dominate the MEN's pages and website, but the Manchester region is creating international athletes and teams without significant external funding or any media recognition. The MEN can play a pivotal role in changing that by helping to spread the word of our game and the work that we undertake.

Manchester is the home of English Men's Lacrosse. The Manchester Evening News should be the home of lacrosse coverage in The UK.
