Pep Gurdiola has stated Ederson is the best penalty take at Man City, but also that he feels like it would disrespect any prospective opponent, were he to let Ederson take one in a competitive game.

As a Manchester City fan, I believe I speak for the millions of us around the globe that would agree, let us not think about the opposition, let us think about us the the fans, what about respecting what the paying Man City fans want? Do we want to see Ederson take a penalty? As paying fans can we not make this request?

I think it’s safe to say, since hearing of Ederson’s ability from the spot kick (we know he can use his feet in his own box, we have seen him assist a goal in multiple seasons, and he [Ederson] scored 10 out of 11 spot kicks against Scott Carson, in the Estadio do Dragoa, 24 hours before the Champions League Final 2021) [Dominic Farrel, reporter, M.E.N 2nd September 2021].

It’s no secret to the fans and team, that Ederson has the ability and the talent to take a spot kick in a competitive game. Does it not disrespect his talent, if he is refused the chance?

Admittedly as football fans, we are aware, should a penalty be missed by the goalkeeper, Ederson and were the opposition team to break with the ball, on a quick counter; that it leaves Ederson having to chase that attack down from the opposition box, effectively  meaning the opposition attacking player, has a constant open net in front of him, from anywhere on the field. This is a noticeably high risk strategy, that if the penalty is missed, leaves the team vulnerable to a counter without a goalkeeper in position.

As Man City fans we aren’t tacticians, we’re just fans that pay to enjoy our team, like all other fans. Our history is very unbalanced but exemplary, and steeped in incredible memories, we are a unique fan base, ‘typical city’ as it were, and we have seen some of football’s greatest ever moments. The highest Home attendance ever in England’s footballing history, the playoff final against Gillingham, Bert Trautman and his broken neck FA Cup Final heroics, averaging 32,000 in Division 2, that aguerooo moment, and united’s subsequent reaction to being pipped on goal difference, beating united 6-1, that Kompany goal against Leicester, one my own personal favourites, is watching my first ever Manchester Derby at Maine Road, Kevin Keegan saw Shaun Goater score his 100th & 101st goal to beat United 3-1 at what was my first and the last ever derby at that magical old Stadium! We Man City fans know what a top moment is made of, what the risk factor is and what the payoff can be, we want to see Ederson take a penalty.

We have faith in Pep and this team, and have watched this current team of players transform how football is played and even watched a local lad, break into one of the world’s best teams, helping them into their 1st Champions League final ever! We know as well as any, that rush of watching something special whether in the old division 2 or whilst conquering the footballing world, we deserve and can handle the consequences whether positive or negative, of Ederson stepping up to take a competitive penalty. We don’t ask for a lot, but once in a generation, let us have a rare and unknown moment of football, that will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity, to see a Manchester City goalkeeper score a penalty in a title winning season…

I imagine from a business perspective the marketing that can be generated for Ederson, the club and any respective or prospective sponsors, if Ederson scored a competitive  penalty, could be noteworthy, imagine if it is the winner in an FA Cup game, or helps the team to another Champions League final or Title?!  The risk of letting city’s best penalty taker take a penalty, seems minimal when considering the return, both actual and financial!

COVID reminded us how special football is to the fans. We believe the club should listen to the fans on this one and let us, just once in Ederson’s City career, experience the feeling of seeing our keeper take, and maybe even score a penalty.
