Reject calls to fly the Palestinian flag from Manchester Town Hall

We, the undersigned, do not believe it is appropriate for the Manchester City Council to agree to fly a Palestinian Flag from the Town Hall.
Whilst we live in a democracy and the freedom of debate is sacrosanct, it is inappropriate for a local council to take a stand on such a complex issue occurring in a foreign country. This should be left to the UK government.
Furthermore, with tensions over the situation in Israel / Gaza running high across the city over the summer and autumn of 2014 much work was done in conjunction with Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police to dissipate the situation and bring calm to the streets of Manchester, and in particular the city center. To favour one side and fly the Palestinian flag would seem a retrograde step, taking us back 6 months and re-igniting communal divisions with the associated racial unpleasantness we witnessed.
Additionally, we recently saw figures released that showed Manchester had seen a massive 80%+ increase in anti Semitic attacks. Many of these were a result of invividuals and organisations attacking Jewish people and institutions as a way of disagreeing with events in the Middle East. Flying the flag of Palestine now would give people more reason to target the Jewish community.
For this reason we ask you to reject this proposal.
