When the expansion programme of the Whitechapel Mosque took place It was recognised by the Management Committee Of East London Mosque Trust that there was a need for a women only gym in the community. Donations were given to the trust for this and many other causes. The gym was established Alhamdulliah and Muslim and non muslim Women from all over London (and from abroad believe it or not), made use of this gym. Mash'Allah. This gym is needed as there is no other Women only gym which caters for the needs of muslim women. We need this gym to encourage our mothers, aunts, sisters, and daughters to leave their homes with the intention to improve their health. It will also guarantee women to be able to do  this in an environment free from men, where they feel safe, and comfortable enough to remove their hijab and just relax after a good workout /sauna/chat. We know exercise benefits every one mentally and  physically; this became blatantly  apparent during the lockdown. During this time one of the things many people experienced was weight gain and mental health issues. After lock down women headed back to the Maryam centre gym to shed weight, shed stress or reignite non social distance friendships. Only to find our community gym had been taken away from us! We need our gym back, for all the reasons above and to encourage our young girls to get active in sport. The site of the gym is also a convenience as it is situated in a women only building,  where it is possible to perform our prayer, study the Qur'an and arabic, socialise, hold bazars and many other activities.
