Kolkata "leaders", Stop constructing roadway through our East Kolkata Wetlands
This petition had 457 supporters
The city of Kolkata is again making a big mistake. The State Urban Development Department is planning to build a highway through the East Kolkata Wetlands, a wetland of International Importance, already vulgarized by illegal constructions. This wetlands is a protected ecosystem under International Law as per Ramsar convention.
How do you think the city of Kolkata ranks first in terms of lowest cost of living among all the other metropolises? How do you think the city of Chennai experiences devastating floods and nothing happens to Kolkata? It is all solely because of the East Kolkata Wetlands.
This new highway will not only jeopardize the ecosystem once and for all, but will also affect the cost of everything from vegetables to fishes in the city. It will also no longer give us the protection of a buffer region when heavy monsoons hit us.
What is more shocking is that the whole project is being designed by the Jadavpur University. If one of the most prestigious and elite educational institutions of our country is engaged in such activities, one cannot help but question, is this what we are learning?
How can our government have so much of disregard for our environment and our ecosystem, not to mention international laws?
