Youth Insearch helps traumatized youth many who have attempted or contemplated suicide. It is an organization with a long proven track record of saving many of these lives. But the Australian Government is withholding support from Youth Insearch and that is both destroying those lives and costing the taxpayer at least $2million per day.

Youth Insearch requires Government funding of 1.6 million per annum to help 485 young people it is currently unable to reach. The cost for not providing this funding is estimated at between 60 and 100 times as much‐ hundreds of millions per annum in health, welfare and legal costs.

Appalled by the enormity of this tragedy, several Australian Rotary clubs have decided to promote this petition.

Here are some more compelling statistics:

  • 30% of those attending Youth Insearch had attempted suicide. (60% have thought about it!) After attending Youth Insearch weekends, 80% no longer feel suicidal. Over two thirds turn their lives around, kicking bad drug habits and crime.
  • 55% (around 266) of the young people report having been sexually abused at the time of attending Youth Insearch rehabilitation sessions. 92% (around 244) report the abuse stopping after attendance (through disclosure & intervention). According to the Childhood Abuse Prevention Research Foundation report, The Cost of Child Abuse in Australia (2007), the cost per child to society in dealing with this issue is $604,519. On this basis Youth Insearch saves the community around $147 million per year successfully intervening in 244 cases of sexual abuse.
  • 64% (310) report having been in trouble with the Police (committing crimes). But only 17% reoffend (83% or 198 of these participants do not reoffend). If it is considered that the cost of juvenile detention is on average $250,000 per youth per year Youth Insearch potentially saves the community around $113 million per year if each of these young people spent a year in detention. And this does not even factor in policing and legal costs. Even if only a small percentage were to spend a year in jail, or a high number short stints in prison, the cost would still be in the tens of millions per year.
  • The total combined costs to the Government relating to drug and alcohol, as well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse is in the region of $33.7 billion. It is impossible to calculate a figure based on each person that has been faced with one of the issues, but it has been conservatively estimated that Youth Insearch currently saves the Federal and State Governments between $3.8m and $30.4m per annum through its early interventions. If Youth Insearch recived the funding it sought, the Queensland Council of Social Services estimates those savings would increase by a further 200% to 2000 %

SIGN THIS PETITION TO THE PRIME MINISTER TO GIVE YOUTH INSEARCH THE FUNDING IT NEEDS.
There is an urgent moral imperative and massive cost saving in supporting the effective, preventative interventions of Youth Insearch. But despite its repeated requests, the Government has not been forthcoming.

Rotary does not seek to be involved in politics but this issue is so simple and compelling as to be above everyday politics. It is also life and death for countless Australian children.
