Same Sex Marriage should be legalised in Australia - Marriage should be promoted, rather than weakened.
Imagine not having your marriage recognised. A cultured society does not discriminate on cases of race, religion, sexuality or marriage rights. Being homophobic is just as bad being racist or sexist. Gay couples deserve to have their marriage legalised. No matter how hard you try to dress it up, denying equal rights to gays and lesbians is homophobic.
According to the 2011 Census, there were about 33,700 same-sex couples in Australia… that is 67,400 men and women who don't get to have their marriage seen true by the rest of the world. Love and marriage come hand in hand. Yes, most rights should have limits but when the government interferes with people’s private lives, dictating who can marry who, freedom is taken away.
Marriage is a successful system and it makes sense to open it to as many people as possible. It should be promoted rather than weakened. People really need to recognise that equal marriage to gay couples, does not make a difference to others lives. They love each other and they want to commit to each other through marriage in the same way as straight couples. Is there genuinely anything wrong with that? We are all the same whether we’re gay, bi or lesbian. It doesn’t change whether you're a good or bad person and it doesn't make a difference to homophobic people’s lives now or in the long run.
Around the world, 23 countries have legalised same sex marriage. It is freedom of choice. Let same sex marriage be legalised to benefit the health and wellbeing of individuals, couples and their families around Australia.
