We Need Fair Funding for the M1
Infrastructure Australia has listed an upgrade of the Pacific Highway (the M1) as a priority for the nation. Two different sections of the Logan-Gold Coast stretch of the M1 have been earmarked for upgrades: the Gateway Motorway merge in Logan, and the Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes section on the Gold Coast. These sections require immediate upgrades to ease the impacts of urban congestion and increase capacity.
Currently, over 145,000 commuters travel on these sections of the M1 each day.
The RACQ, Gold Coast City Council, Logan City Council, The Queensland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Queensland State Government have all stated that the Turnbull Government needs to match Federal Labor's 80% funding commitment for the M1.
Currently, Malcolm Turnbull has only committed to funding 50% of the necessary upgrades in Logan and the Gold Coast.
In NSW, between the Qld-NSW border and Newcastle, federal funding of M1 upgrades has been provided at 80%.
This isn't fair.
Malcolm Turnbull needs to listen to the tens of thousands of commuters and local residents who rely on the M1 on a daily basis, and ensure his government provides the necessary funding for these Queensland projects to go ahead.
