It's time we gave our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander a peoples the right to a voice in Parliament, a voice to speak out on issues that affect them, a voice that cannot be silenced and suppressed.
At the request of the Australian Government, over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders came together as a Referendum Council to discuss reforms that could improve the lives and representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and would tell the truth of First Nations history so we could begin to heal our nations wounds.
They issued a document called 'Uluru Statement from the Heart', calling for the establishment of a 'First Nations Voice', a parliamentary body enshrined in the Australian Constitution that would advise on issues affecting Indigenous communities.
Unfortunately, the Turnbull Government immediately rejected the Council's bid for progress and healing, claiming that the proposal for a constitutionally enshrined voice wouldn't succeed at a referendum. However, the Government never conducted any polling or obtained any data to inform this opinion. Instead, they blatantly shut down public debate on the Council's suggestions.
The Turnbull Government's unfounded presumptions not only deny the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but deny the voices of all Australians who hold in their hearts a vision of a better and fairer Australia for all.
Here's what the UN has to say about Government's decision:
As it stands, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples remain the most highly incarcerated population on the planet. Indigenous women go missing and children are removed or alienated from their families at unprecedented rates, left to languish in detention centers. Inter-generational cycles of trauma are perpetuated without recourse.
As the Uluru Statement from the Heart says "This is the torment of our powerlessness. We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country. When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country."
You can read the rest of the beautiful Uluru Statement from the Heart here:
Indeed, it is time our Government stepped up and acknowledged the rightful place of our Nation's First Peoples and gave them a voice to make decisions about their future and the future of their children. It is time to show our Government that we, the Australian people, support the equality, human rights and right to recognition of our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
Sign this petition to let the Government know that you support the Referendum Council's proposal to establish a constitutionally enshrined Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
Let's show the Australian Government that the Australian public would vote YES for a constitutionally enshrined Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice if it were put to a national referendum.
