A voice for our First Nations Peoples

As a non indigenous Australian, I feel I am living off to proceeds of a crime. I believe that simply handing back what little land is available to the First Nations People under the Native Title Act is a start, but certainly not enough. I understand I did not perpetrate this crime, but I am living on stolen land. If you purchased a car and then later found it was stolen, would you not feel some empathy for the original owner.

The 'Uluru Statement' suggested an ADVISORY body of First Nations People enshrined in the Constitution. The Prime Minister has rejected this out of hand and has stated that the Australian people would reject the proposal. I for one do not reject this proposal and believe there are many more fair-minded Australians who feel the same. This does not seem too much to ask especially as the first nations people of New Zealand and Canada have had such a voice for a long time.

The Prime Minister and his Government need to rethink this outright rejection of the proposal and give the people of Australia their say through a referendum. As the leader of this country he should be joining with First Nations People in a positive way to make this happen.

Please join with me to make a start to true reconciliation in this country.
