Reduce food waste to reduce unhealthy air
Sustainable Development Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, contains a wide range of targets, one of which is closely related to Think.Eat.Save. SDG Target 12.3 seeks to halve global food waste at retail and consumer levels, as well as to reduce food loss during production and supply. To measure food waste and losses, two indices have been proposed: a Food Waste Index (FWI) and a Food Loss Index (FLI).
If food loss and waste were a country, it would be the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste also burdens waste management systems, exacerbates food insecurity, making it a major contributor to the three planetary crises of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. This is why Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 aims to halve food waste and reduce food loss by 2030.
So, we need to take some initiatives to overcome this food waste problem. Here are the initiatives that we can take:
- Modify food production with demand
- “Think Eat Save – Reduce Your Foodprint” campaign
- Donate unsold goods - collaborate with food bank programs
- Improving education and awareness for food waste
