SEEDS started this petition to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency

We would like to urge the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to act immediately against encroachment of foreign fishermen into waters of Sabah.

The presence of illegal foreign fishing fleets undermines the security, safety and sovereignty of the state. Such presence will also threaten the local fishers and jeopardize the fishing activities. These foreign vessels are using illegal methods to catch the fish in our sea, causing huge impact on the state’s marine and coral life and the entire ecosystem.

The encroachment by illegal foreign fishing vessels has caused serious reduction of fishing products made by locals in Sabah. It causes the economic and social impacts arising from reduced fishing opportunities, affecting fishermen’s income, and employment. Hence we want the government to intensify efforts and impose maximum punishment to stop these illegal foreign fishermen who have continuously violated our local laws.

Last but not least, we want to stress that the authority must strengthen the enforcement capacity and capability and to take significant measures in securing our maritime border and sovereignty.
