Zakir Abdul Karim Naik, the popular televangelist and Islamic preacher, is now wanted by the Indian authorities.
Problems arose for the preacher, after Bangladeshi authorities said that one of the gunmen responsible for an attack on a cafe in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, which left 22 people dead, had been inspired by him.
Bangladesh responded by banning Peace TV, an Islamic channel broadcast from Dubai which Naik founded in 2006 and which claims to reach 100 million people worldwide.
India's counterterrorism agency, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), filed a First Information Report, an official police complaint, against Naik and the Mumbai-based non-profit Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) that he founded in 1991, accusing him of indulging in unlawful activities and promoting religious hatred.
Indian authorities have accused the popular Mumbai-based preacher Zakir Naik of supporting terrorism, which he denies.
India says that the charges and evidence against Naik are "significant".
That he has spoken in support of organisations engaged in gruesome terror is documented and available," he added.
Naik has in the past denied India’s allegations. In an interview with a Kuwaiti television channel in May, he said he was being targeted by the Hindu nationalist government of Narendra Modi because of his popularity. If he has done no wrong he has nothing to fear. No reason to abscond.
A group of Malaysian activists has filed suit in the High Court to deport Naik, saying he is a threat to public peace in the multiracial society – about 40 per cent of Malaysia’s population is non-Muslim. Naik, who has been banned in the UK, has been given permanent residency in Malaysia, and embraced by top government officials.
Naik’s presence in Malaysia is dangerous with substantial Christians, Hindus and Buddhists living in peace respecting each other's religion and culture..
Naik had said Islam is only true religion & no other religion can be allowed to be propagated in an Islamic country
Naik expressed support for Osama bin Laden as one who "terrorises the biggest terrorist, ie America''
Naik pointed out that Islamic scholars approve of suicide bombing as a war-time tactic
