Malaysian Government should immediately stop the deportation of Uyghurs to China.

Malaysian police arrested 11 Uyghurs who escaped from a Thailand immigration detention center in November 2017 and Chinese officials are demanding they be returned to Beijing. These Uyghurs were in Thai detention center because they didn’t want to return to China, where they could be subjected to torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment.

Uyghurs (or Uighurs, Uygurs) are ethnically and culturally a Turkic people living in the areas of Central Asia commonly known as East Turkestan. Uyghurs practice Islam and lead predominantly secular lives. There are an estimated 20 million Uyghurs living in East Turkestan and abroad. Under decades of repressive rule, the existence of the Uyghur nation is under threat as the Chinese government continues to carry out deliberate policies opposing centuries-old tradition, culture & religion. Human rights violations remain pervasive including persecution on cultural and religious grounds, arbitrary arrests and the silencing of peaceful dissent.

China regularly conducts “strike hard” campaigns in Xinjiang, including police raids on Uyghur households, restrictions on Islamic practices, and curbs on the culture and language of the Uyghur people, including videos and other material.

Despite the Malaysian Police’s investigation finding no link of the arrested Uyghurs with any terrorists organization, they are still at the risk of deportation. Heavy-handed rule by Chinese authorities had forced many of them to flee abroad. If returned, these Uyghurs could go missing or tortured to death. In-spite of such concerns, the Malaysian Government is trying to deport Uyghurs back.

We want to urge you to raise your voice for our community and ask Malaysia to stop the deportation immediately. We also want the Government to follow all the procedure in a transparent manner and let these Uyghurs travel freely.
