Making housing more affordable

Making housing more affordable
Currently in Chicago affordable housing is a big issue. This has been an issue for many years. When Covid-19 came along, there were many supply shortages which led to many manufacturers slowing their production/construction of items. Many businesses had to shut down and close because of this shortage of production. Hundreds of people lost their jobs. Prices increased, along with the cost of land. If the cost of land is more expensive, then the prices of “affordable” housing will increase, therefore no longer making it affordable housing for the homeless. We ask that the government focus their construction and attention on more affordable housing rather than luxury homes for more wealthy people. Since the land prices have increased builders have been encouraged to build nicer and more expensive homes for the wealthy. As these housing prices increase, the amount of people in poverty rises as well. Home prices are rising at twice the rate of wage growth. Lori Lightfoot has done some things to change this issue, but not quite enough. She has done things like buy 6 acres of vacant land that will be used for the creation of more affordable, and safe housing. She has also raised $1 billion dollars for affordable housing as well. She has done a lot, and we thank her for all the progress that she has made for the homeless. There is still a problem, and we need to make a bigger change. For example are we giving these homes to the people that need it the most? We hope that you will sign this petition in hopes to see a change, and make housing more affordable.
