Why this petition matters

Started by Justin Ogilby

Every year thousands of freshman move into dorms on the University of Cincinnati campus. For some this is their first exposure to city life. Many don't have cars, and rely on nearby restaurants and businesses surrounding campus for their daily needs.

Campus is surrounded by roads that are essentially highways. The speed limit on most surrounding streets is too high, and even the absurdly high speed limits are regularly exceeded by drivers. Crossing the street is dangerous and deadly. Already this year there have been 128 crashes, and 1 fatality, on the 4 streets bordering campus. A student hit by a car traveling 40mph has only a 10% chance of survival. If the car is traveling 20mph the survival rate rises to 90%.

We're asking that the University of Cincinnati commit to collaborating with area neighborhood groups to make the streets bordering campus safe for people walking, biking or traveling via transit at any time of the day or night. The University should work with the City of Cincinnati and area neighborhood groups to:

  • Set the speed limit of every street bordering campus to 25 mph
  • Identify specific problem areas, and work to identify the most effective solutions to increase pedestrian safety
  • Implement safety improvements to address the identified problems and so that no more than 5% of vehicles are speeding
