Make The Requirements For Teaching About Mental Health in Schools More Clear
Why this petition matters
When it comes to mental health and illness many people are unaware and there is a negative stigma surrounding it. An important way to help reverse the stigma and make people aware is to teach about mental health/illness in schools. When discussing the requirements around teaching about mental health, the (105 ILCS 110/) Critical Health Problems and Comprehensive Health Education Act says “The instruction on mental health and illness must evaluate the multiple dimensions of health by reviewing the relationship between physical and mental health so as to enhance student understanding, attitudes, and behaviors that promote health, well-being, and human dignity.” Under this act the actual requirements around teaching about mental health are very vague. This allows for schools to get away with teaching very little about mental health and teaching about it in a way that is not productive. Schools should be required to teach about mental health in a productive, detailed, and age appropriate manner. It is important to discuss things like general mental health, details about different mental illnesses, self harm, suicide, etc. The lack of discussions in schools helps contribute to the negative stigma around mental illness because people are not aware of it and they are uneducated.
