England v Scotland is the world's oldest international football fixture, and the oldest international football rivalry. The annual meeting between the two sides was once an eagerly awaited event on the sporting calendar.

The fixture has generated some memorable classic matches in its history. Such as the meeting in 1928 which was won 5-1 by Scotland, earning the team the nickname the Wembley Wizards. The meeting in 1961, which was won 9-3 by England, the highest margin of victory/defeat in the fixture's history. The meeting in 1967, when the reigning world champions England were defeated 3-2 by Scotland, ending England's 19 match unbeaten run. The 1975 meeting in which Scotland were trounced 5-1 by England. The 1977 meeting where a dominant Scotland earned a 2-1 victory. The meeting at UEFA Euro 1996 where a tight match ended in a 2-0 victory for England (with Paul Gascoigne scoring what is probably the fixture's greatest goal). And the two-legged Play-Off for UEFA Euro 2000 which resulted in a 2-0 win for England at Hampden followed by a 1-0 win for Scotland at Wembley.

While the Rugby Union teams for both countries have the opportunity to compete for the Calcutta Cup in the Six Nations every year, returning the football fixture to the footballing calendar would give football fans on both sides of the border something more to look forward to. It is entirely possible for Hampden or Wembley to hold a friendly or Rous Cup match at the end of the season. Due to the history and tradition, every match would be a sold out event. The organised hooliganism that was largely responsible for having the annual meeting between the two teams cancelled in 1989 is not the same problem today as it was in the 1970's and 80's.

Recent meetings between the sides (especially those in 2013 and 2017) have proven that despite the apparent gulf in class, the fixture can still be competitive in modern times. The passion the oldest international football fixture still stirs up in people is more of a reason to bring it back. England v Scotland is the reason we have international football as we know it today.
