Why this petition matters

Homophobia is a major problem in every high school. In the United States, schools are the primary means of educating, socializing, and supplying services to children. Regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, a school may be a challenging setting for any child. They are frequently hostile to students who identify as lgbtq+. In many states and school systems, lgbtq+ students and instructors are not protected against discrimination. A lack of policies and practices that affirm and support lgbtq+ individuals. Because of a failure to enforce existing laws, lgbtq+ youth across the country continue to experience bullying, exclusion, and discrimination at school. This puts those children in danger, both physically and psychologically, and may limit their educational opportunities. As lgbtq+ kids have become more prominent, many states and school districts have overlooked their needs and failed to ensure that they have access to the same resources as other students. At my school, we only have gender-neutral restrooms in the main building, so those who are in other areas of the school have to either go from one building to the next or wait until they get to the main building. This irritates me to great extent, however, I recently got the opportunity to visit Jamestown High School. I asked another kid where the gender-neutral restroom was and the student then led me to the restrooms. They showed me one "Male" restroom and one "Female" restroom and told me to pick one. This enraged me since not only was there not a single gender-neutral restroom on campus, but the students were also misinformed and unconcerned. This is an excellent illustration of how schools divert attention away from lgbtq+ kids needs. Every classroom at Jamestown High School is equipped with a digital clock. While other individuals may not see this as an issue, I do. The money spent on these digital clocks might have been used to build a restroom where trans students could feel safe and comfortable. No child should ever feel as though they are unnoticed or unwelcome at school. The above scenario also demonstrates that the employees are not the only people in need of lgbtq+ education. We deal with phobia from both students and employees and no one seems to care and I'm tired of it. I'm tired of lgbtq+ kids being marginalized. People are not going to fight this battle for us; therefore, we must band together and keep fighting. Many people have gone before us, ensuring that we can be seen and heard. All schools would be like Jamestown Highschool if it weren't for them. It is only right that we continue the battle that they began, so that future generations will never have to experience what it is like to feel invisible or unsafe in their own school. School boards are not going to listen to what we have to say unless we have the evidence to back it up so, If you are comfortable with it please put your story’s in the comments in order to accumulate enough evidence for us to finally have something change.
