Why this petition matters

Started by Kimberly Henry

On September 22, 2022, Kimberly Henry spoke during public comment at the City Council meeting to express concern about the city's lack of an ADA Coordinator. She shared data, some experiences of persons living with disabilities and requested to be put on a future agenda. At the close of the meeting, there was no motion made by the City Council to reserve time on a future agenda for Kimberly to expand on this issue.

The City of San Angelo does not have a designated ADA compliance employee, commonly known as an ADA Coordinator.  This person's role is to ensure ADA compliance under Title II for government services, buildings, and programs. Furthermore, this person is responsible for updating the city's transition plan (a.k.a. self-evaluation) every three to five years. San Angelo's hasn't been updated since 1993!  San Angelo has at least 16,000 citizens living with a disability. That is an estimate considering many people living with a disability are not comfortable disclosing their disability or accessibility needs.  The City of San Angelo needs to allow time to discuss this issue and hear prepared solutions by the public.

Why now? There is a long history of advocacy for people living with disabilities in the City of San Angelo. In most cases, those advocates and citizens faced an uphill battle. Now, we are approaching our concerns comprehensively.  Join us in fighting for equity and accessibility!

We will continue to speak during public comment until we are given dedicated time on the agenda. We will also follow through with this effort until a visible change is enforced and taken seriously.
