Make Pickleball and Youth Programming a Core Part of the RFK Campus Redevelopment

Make Pickleball and Youth Programming a Core Part of the RFK Campus Redevelopment
The Issue
Pickleball is rapidly gaining momentum, becoming one of the fastest-growing sports across the United States. Here in Washington, D.C.—especially in Wards 6, 7, and 8—young and diverse communities are embracing the sport in growing numbers.
Despite this, access to dedicated pickleball courts in the District remains limited. A recent GoPlay survey of nearby residents found that pickleball was among the top two most requested activities for the RFK campus area.
As D.C. considers redevelopment plans for the RFK campus, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the site into a community recreation hub by including dedicated outdoor courts, indoor pickleball courts at the new athletic facility, and structured youth programming.
Youth programs are critical. Pickleball is affordable, easy to learn, and adaptable—making it an ideal way to engage kids early, promote physical health, provide safe gathering spaces, foster mentorship, and create pathways to competitive opportunities.
We urge the District of Columbia to seize this moment to:
Build dedicated outdoor and indoor pickleball courts at RFK,
Integrate youth programming as a central feature, and
Create a vibrant, healthy, and inclusive community space for generations to come.
