Angelika Tan started this petition to Department of Justice

Hello! We are Angelika Tan, Mhickaella Viray and Lea Iremedio from Dominican College. We present to you our petition of extending and intensifying punishments for sexual harassers.

To most women living in an urban setting, sexual harassment and in some cases stalking is just part of their daily routine. Throughout the years, women have been constantly catcalled by men just because of their appearance. The stares and whistling makes women uneasy and uncomfortable. It makes us feel like less of a human and more of an object. It is time to end the catcalling and bring in a generation where women can peacefully walk down a street and not be irritated or afraid of men saying indecent things to them.

Sexual harassment includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, unwanted touching or physical contact, unwanted comments, wolf-whistling and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. This type of crime can have extreme effects on the victim. Sexual harassment implicates negative health consequences for victims. Victims of Sexual harassment may often experience illness, loss of self confidence, psychological damage, depression, Post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep problems and often feel intimidated, ashamed, angry and humiliated.

Republic Act 7877, Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995
AN ACT DECLARING SEXUAL HARASSMENT UNLAWFUL IN THE EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION OR TRAINING ENVIRONMENT, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
This act states that any person who violates the provisions of this Act shall, upon conviction, be penalized by imprisonment of not less than one (1) month nor more than six (6) months, or a fine of not less than Ten thousand pesos (P10,000) nor more than Twenty thousand pesos (P20,000), or both such fine and imprisonment at the discretion of the court.

As for women 88% respondents have experienced sexual harassment at least once. The Philippines is lauded by governments abroad for having several pro-women laws. Advocates, however, point out that not all laws bear teeth that is why we want to extend and intensify the sexual harasser's punishments.

Sexual harasser's punishment must be extended for (5) five to (10) ten years of imprisonment, or a fine of (P200,000) Two hundred thousand pesos to (P250,000) Two hundred fifty thousand pesos, or both such fine and imprisonment at discretion of the court.

Signing this petition means you agree and approve that we should extend and intensify punishments for sexual harassers.
