Why this petition matters

Car Dependency is a term used to describe neighbourhoods, towns, and countries where the population has to rely on personal vehicles in order to travel around said area, due to a lack of infrastructure, such as public transit, sidewalks, and bike lanes. Car dependency can also be caused by "urban sprawl", an effect of poor urban planning, in which low-density suburban areas make up a large portion of residential areas, creating a major distance between workplaces, stores, and other notable locations from households.

Orléans is notorious for this dependency - Major roads have sidewalks, although they are almost always empty. A majority of side roads and residential areas have zero sidewalks - almost as if our city is being designed for cars instead of people.

This dependency has many negative effects on our society as a whole - emissions from vehicles reduce air quality, stress created by driving causes a decline in mental health, and creates a less accessible society for those who cannot drive, or afford to drive.
