Virginia is one of the few states to still tax military retirement compensation, and it's past time to alter that. Despite profiting over $8 billion on commercial and government DoD military contracts, Virginia continues to tax our veterans. Those who defended our country with their lives should be exempt from paying income taxes on their retirement compensation. All state taxes must be removed from military retirement income in Virginia. Most retired military veterans make less than $25K per year, which is below Virginia's poverty level. Many veterans are unable to return to work in order to supplement their income and maintain a comfortable standard of living. It is past time, to show that we value and honor our military men and women for their service to our country.
