Recycling benefits the planet!

At Merrimack College, trash bins are all over campus, in hallways, bathrooms, common areas, etc. For some reason, there are little to no recycling bins. As I ventured across campus, the main building with recycling was the library, with recycling bins all over the singular building and yet there are no recycling bins seen as majorly in any other building. There are definitely a few around other building but majorly scarce, so in turn many recyclable products are thrown away instead. With many dormitory building on campus, outside will most likely have a designated area/dumpster for trash, but still no place for recycling.

We learn that recycling is good for the planet in our younger years and then eventually, we never hear about it again, unless we see it on the news or social media. Another landfill is over running a country, a new advertisement for a product in a new recyclable bottle, should we send our trash into outer space? With the process of recycling, we can get into a cycle of using the same materials to prolong its usage, rather than to tear through our natural resources until there is nothing left. More and more of todays products are being used with recyclable packaging that can be reused in the future if proper disposed of.  Recycling brings more jobs onto the table.

In countries like Japan that have extremely strict recycling rules, the percentage of 40% reduction of plastic waste by 2030. With the separation of all types of recycling material, varying from different parts of Japan, with the repercussion varying as well, they are able to make a huge impact as a country. With a few thousand people on campus every day, I believe that Merrimack College can make an impact that can influence other colleges, or the surrounding towns and cities. With everyone’s effort, growing with each person that help, the impact can grow across the world!
