Make Juneteenth an Official Nassau County Holiday

The Issue

As a county legislator representing many cultures and ethnicities, I feel it is important to recognize all cultural holidays. Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas were finally informed of their freedom, a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It signifies a day of liberation and cultural independence for African Americans. Recognizing Juneteenth as an official county holiday would honor this pivotal moment in history and promote greater cultural awareness and unity within our diverse community. Please join me in advocating for this important cause by signing the petition.
