Why this petition matters

Started by Julie Hurst

In the UK it is currently only considered a criminal offence if you fail to report striking a dog while driving and you could be fined as much as £5,000 but, there is no penalty for failing to report a collision with a cat.

Highways England has indicated as many as 8,000 cats are killed in road collisions and left unreported each year in England alone. If a driver hit a cat and legally had to report it, it would not only potentially save their life but, if they cannot be saved, bring closure to the families and some comfort knowing what happened to their beloved pet.

A week ago we lost our beautiful 11 year old cat Tiger. She was the sweetest soul and it has absolutely devastated us. We are a cat loving family and have lost cat before but, never due to a road traffic accident. It was only because of the kindness of strangers, that we got to find out how she died.

The only reasoning behind this law is because dogs wear a collar and lead. A piece of fabric.

If this action was taken it could save not only heartbreak but, a precious animals life or closure to the grieving family.

It is 2022 and this law must be changed. Feline lives are not inferior or less worthy than a canines. As domestic animals they are loved equally and so, if they are involved in an RTA the actions following such an event should be the same.
