Make Illinois a Safer State from Sex Offenders: There is No Tolerance for Sexual Violence

I have suffered with PTSD for forty years, stemming from the sexual abuse I suffered as a child and also the sexual assault that was committed by a coworker close to twenty years ago.  I never reported the sexual assault.  Approximately ninety percent of victims of sexual assault knew their attacker prior to the assault, yet only twenty percent of victims ever report the assault.  Sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes with a sexual assault occurring every two minutes in the U.S.  Illinois' current statute of limitations on sexual assault gives its victims a short time to report the attack, leaving individuals who commit sexual assault offenses freedom from ever serving justice for their crimes.  When individuals who commit sexual assault offenses are not apprehended and prosecuted they are likely to repeat sex offenses.  Knowing the devastating effects of sexual assault to its victims, more needs to be done to protect individuals, both in reporting their attack and the time frame allowed.

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Congress.

----------------
Eliminate the statute of limitations on sexual assault in Illinois.

I have suffered with PTSD for forty years, stemming from abuse I suffered as a child and also the sexual assault that was committed by a coworker. I was raped by a coworker close to twenty years ago after I went out with a group after work; it was a rape I never reported. I never reported it because as a victim of child sexual abuse, I was particularly vulnerable to the guilt and blame that victims place upon themselves. I didn't know that men didn't have a right to rape a woman under the influence of alcohol. My offender still walks free today. Had I been raped in another state that carried no statute of limitations, my offender could still be criminally charged. I nor any victim should be denied the right of justice because of where we live. I may never heal from PTSD; I don't know that any sufferer completely does. Had my offenders made different choices I wouldn't have any of it. Every sex offender should be held responsible for the destruction they inflict on their victims lives. There is no excuse for sexual violence and there should be no tolerance for it, past or present.
