Smokefree Glenoaks started this petition to Glen Oaks Village Board and

Dear Glen Oaks Village Board,

We, the undersigned, are sick of breathing in secondhand smoke from our neighbors. We are also fearful that their smoking habits may cause a fire that spreads into our units, jeopardizing our lives and the lives of our family members.

Did you know...

1. Secondhand and third-hand smoke (residue left when the smoke clears such as lead, arsenic, cyanide, and carbon monoxide) contain multiple carcinogens. Even short exposures can have serious consequences for healthy people, especially young children whose lungs and organs are still developing.

2. Under the Federal Fair Housing Act, co-op associations may be sued for allowing smoking that impinges on quiet enjoyment. Such legal battles may increase our maintenance fees.

3. As of July 30, 2018, all public housing administered by HUD is smoke-free. The residents of Glen Oaks Village also deserve to breathe clean air in their own homes.

4. For owners, going smoke-free means less property damage and turnover costs. Plus, the lower risk of a fire can lead to insurance savings. According to a survey of property owners in 6 NY counties, 97% of landlords who have a no-smoking policy are satisfied with their decision.

5. A 2014 poll of New York City voters found that nearly 70% want to live in smoke-free housing. A growing number of co-ops and condos are revisiting their smoking policies as of August 2018 due to a citywide law requiring apartment complexes to adopt a smoking policy.

If the board wants to ensure that residents are safe, healthy, and happy, and that property values do not diminish, then they must enact a smoke-free policy in all individual units at Glen Oaks Village.

Sincerely,

Concerned owners and residents of Glen Oaks Village.
