Make Funding for Quality Early Childhood Programs a Priority

Only about half of Louisiana’s children—52%—enter kindergarten ready to learn and with the basic skills they need to succeed. These students start the race to educational success far behind with little chance to catch up—and, still worse, unable to cross the finish line.

The good news is that we can right this wrong by prioritizing investments in quality early learning so that all students have access to high quality pre-k programs across the state of Louisiana.

Tell your local district leaders that you want them to make funding for quality early childhood programs a priority for the youngest learners in your community.

When students don’t have access to quality pre-k programs and enter kindergarten without the fundamental skills they need to succeed, they start at a deficit that isn’t easily corrected. In Louisiana and nationally, fewer than three in ten four-year-olds participate in high quality prekindergarten. Less than 40% of low-income three-year-olds in the state have access to publicly funded high quality early childhood and education programs.

It's critical that leaders at the local, state, and national levels close the gap and make investing in high quality prekindergarten programs a priority so all student get the strong start they need to succeed.

Early education is one of the best investments we can make. Children who attend high quality prekindergarten are more likely to do well in school, graduate from high school, and find a stable job. Parents who know that their children are attending high quality pre-k programs can be more productive at work with the peace of mind that their children are getting a solid foundation in a safe learning environment. This investment will put our children on the path to their biggest dreams and beyond and yield high returns for families, communities, our state, and our nation.
