Why this petition matters

It's unfortunate to say that school shootings are all too common today. Over the years, reports of these shootings have plagued the news. Countless lives have been taken and families are left with unspeakable grief. For years, our kids, our teachers, and our parents have lived with the reality of school shootings. Why has nothing changed? Children are afraid to attend school, and parents send their kids off to school wondering if they will never come back home. It's time that our Florida leaders take meaningful action and implement security measures to keep deadly school shootings from ever happening again, with bullet-resistant classroom doors. The goal is to install these doors in classrooms and common areas such as the library and the cafeteria. In the event of an active shooter, the students who are out in the open could find refuge in one of these rooms. What we're looking to do is buy the critical eight to 10 minutes of time that it would take for the police force to get on the scene. Even though schools exercise safety precautions such as active shooter drills, it's important that we focus on implementing security measures before it even happens. Ultimately, the main goal of bulletproof doors in schools are to stop a shooter from being able to attack students without resistance. With this last line of defense, a shooter can be stopped before they're able to get into the populated areas of a school and attack. The lowest levels of protection in these bulletproof doors is level one, which is able to stand up against handguns. While the highest level is an eight, which is able to stand up to AR rifles like the one that was used at the Uvalde shooting. With school starting again this year, millions of parents, teachers, and students have to go back to school in fear for their safety everyday. Despite being told by the people that are in charge that schools are safe over and over again, students and faculty are the ones who are actually in schools risking their lives. There's a huge disconnect between the people making the decisions, and the families and students who are actually bearing the brunt of those decisions. It's time for our voices to be heard and urge Florida lawmakers to take action. They need to fortify our schools across the state in order to keep our kids and teachers safe. When school shootings happen lawmakers offer their thoughts and prayers, but we don't need that. We need action. And we need change.
