As of now, July 1 2020, the Oregon Department of Education is NOT requiring students to wear masks in school facilities when we return in Fall 2020. Scientific studies have shown again and again that face masks drastically reduce the spread of COVID-19. However, this is only effective if the majority of people are wearing them. I personally, would not feel safe attending school if not everyone is required to wear a face covering. The Department of Education’s job is to ensure students have safe access to education. By not requiring everyone to wear face masks in school facilities, the ODE is forcing us as students to choose between our education and our health. This is unacceptable. We have the power, and the responsibility, to hold our government agencies accountable. By signing this petition, you are taking a step towards ensuring that our community stays healthy and that our government officials stay accountable. If we don’t take action, our community will suffer dire consequences. Wearing masks saves lives. As Oregonians we need to stand with each other. Protect each other. Now more than ever, is the time to put others before yourself. One of the best ways to do that is to ensure that everyone in school facilities wears a mask. Make the ODE listen. Make the ODE require masks in schools.
