The destruction of rainforests, rivers, ecosystems, drinking water for entire areas, contamination or pollution of natural areas is called ecocide.  For example, large agribusinesses destroy a football field of rainforest per day.  Oil companies leak oil into rivers.  Corporations leak chemicals into the air, water, and soil.  We can make ecocide a crime--at our national level--and internationally!  

This affects people's health, how long people live, and the quality of our lives.   It destroys homes for wildlife.  It affects our ability to grow healthy food on family farms and at home.  

The continued use of fossil fuels is an ongoing worsening manmade disaster that is affecting people around the world, especially people of color in the U.S. and people living in the "global South" and island and coastal communities where sea levels are rising. 

In this petition we are asking our leaders to pass laws locally, nationally, and internationally to make ecocide a crime.  Human lives, wildlife that we treasure, beautiful natural areas, safe drinking water, rainforests, and the Earth's ability to sustain life are all at stake!
