Diwali is a key holiday for many Indians. It plays a role in our cultural and religious lives. While we see other faiths gain awareness for their respective events, the ones of the Indian population at Bergen County Academies are largely disregarded. The BCA student body is comprised of roughly 20% of Indian students. Yet, most teachers don't recognize the significance of the holiday and we are forced to balance studying for tests, quizzes, projects, and homework with our cultural identity. While we are highly motivated and devoted students, we have to choose between our families and cultures, and our academics. We believe that Diwali should be a holiday for students so as to allow them to reconnect with their cultures and religions without the worry of pending academic assignments. The Bergen County Technical School District is, and prides itself on being, progressive and innovative, creating the leaders of tomorrow, however, to be truly progressive, we must recognize all cultures and allow our students to expand their lives and connect with their histories.
