Why this petition matters

Started by Gabby Wise

A woman in Utah has a corgi who was debarked by his previous owners. This dog can no longer voice any form of discomfort meaning his only way to express discomfort is by biting. This dog is now reactive and must wear a muzzle to protect himself and others due to a cruel procedure.

Pennsylvania currently allows debarking as long as the procedure is done by a licensed veterinarian and the dog is under anesthesia. Debarking is an invasive surgical procedure that involves removing a large amount of laryngeal tissue. There is a great amount of postoperative pain due to this surgery. There are many risks to the procedure such as bleeding, acute airway swelling, respiratory distress, gagging, a significant increase in heat intolerance, and compromised airway access. That's just to name a few. The procedure is unnecessary and inherently cruel. Debarking is irreversible. This surgery denies dogs their primary means of expression. If most vets will refuse to do the procedure because it is unethical, why is it still legal if even the veterinarians who perform the procedure agree it should not be allowed? Sign this petition to help change that
