A few Crown Heights North residents have gathered together to ensure the New York Independent Redistricting Commission (NYIRC) hears our voices. For many years, Crown Heights North has been fractured and disenfranchised not only at the voting polls, but also surrounding common issues that we all are challenged with as residents of Crown Heights North. We now have the opportunity to strengthen our position by recommending we be made whole as a community. The NYIRC is working on redrawing the district lines. The lines are redrawn every ten years after the census count. Many residents will be testifying in front of the NYIRC Commissioners on November 16, 2021 at 3p at Medgar Evers College. Everyone is welcome to participate and/or testify by registering with NYIRC.  For more redistricting information click here. We ask you to also join us in advocating for our community by signing this petition and supporting our testimony below:

Commissioners,

Crown Heights North is currently fractured when it comes to electoral districts. We have two congressional districts, three assembly districts (AD), two senate districts and two council districts in our community. This division diminishes our political power and our voices. This division not only decreases our voting power, but it also makes our votes insignificant within the electoral districts in Crown Heights North. This community is asking for the same equity other communities are bestowed.

Our testimony focuses on the AD lines in Crown Heights North. As a community, we are best served by having cohesive political representation. Crown Heights North is divided between the 43rd, 56th and a portion of the 57th AD. Resolutions to our issues are often delayed due to the current assembly lines (e.g., blocks can share the same issues that have to be addressed by different assembly members). This leads to constituents having to contact two assembly members to solve one issue which delays, and at times bottlenecks the process. This issue can be remediated by changing the current lines.

Crown Heights North wants to be absorbed into an AD as a whole and intact. We want to be a part of an AD that is compact and contiguous and shares the same history, culture, needs and interests.  The new lines we are seeking will grant Crown Heights North the strength, equity and unity that has been devoid for years. The AD that best suits our vision is either the 56th or 43rd AD. We live here, we know what we want, and we know what we need. Thank you.
