Make Christopher Street a Gay Landmark

In 1969. at the Stonewall Inn the world saw the birth of the Gay rights
movement. Fear turned to anger and the people said enough was enough and
took back their street. It was here on Christopher Street that the community
took a stand against intolerance and demanded their legal rights. Since that
momentous day. Christopher Street has played an integral role in that
movement. The street has hosted many parades, festivals, marches and
protests. We have experienced triumphs and tragedies on this street. For
many of us Christopher Street was the only place where we could gather and
feel safe. Even today it provides a sanctuary to many LGBTQ youth who
feel they have nowhere else lo go. Of course times are changing and now there
are many places where the Gay community feels safe to visit but we must not
forget our roots. If not for Christopher Street and the many activists who
fought there, we may not have had a Chelsea or a Hell's kitchen. That In why
it is important to recognize Christopher Street and its importance. We need
Chrislopher Street to be designated as a Gay landmark. We need to protect
our history and honor it's continuing role in the fight for our civil rights. Our
street should be lined with the Pride flag. Our sidewalks should have plaques
honoring the people who fought back against the tide of intolerance. Tourists
pay tribute to Christopher Street when they visit. Now it's time we do the same.Designate Christopher Street a Gay Landmark.
