Why this petition matters

Started by Zuyu Liu

We ask the city of Chicago to invest an additional $10 million into the CTA, in which $6 million would be spent on R&D -- a significant (5%) increase in its current spending -- and $4 million would be spent on our outreach campaigns. Our goal is to quicken the shift to all renewable energy and encourage more Chicago residents to use public transit as it’s convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly.

Public transit is especially important for essential workers as well as making Chicago more sustainable. Recently, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has made large steps forward, pledging to use only renewable energy by 2040. However, only 11 out of 1,800 buses use electricity. Moreover, public transit ridership has dropped severely during the pandemic, in some areas as much as 70%, which jeopardizes the future of the CTA. To promote Chicago public transit, we first commit more to the research of electric buses. For example, battery life is drastically reduced during cold temperatures, a major obstacle to the rollout of electric vehicles. Currently, the CTA has $130 million to purchase around 600 electric buses, and $6 million more is a 5% increase which would greatly help the CTA. Second, we need to reach out to Chicago residents. Through a large city-wide publicity campaign, our goal is to encourage them to use public transportation as much as possible since it’s affordable, green, and efficient.
